A way-too-early look at the 2022 Notre Dame football schedule

Week 4: At North Carolina

Notre Dame heads to North Carolina in Week 4, to play a Tar Heels team that they’ve had lots of success against recently. 2021 was a complete disappointment for North Carolina, who started the season ranked in the top-10 before going 6-7. Starting quarterback Sam Howell got no help all season, and head coach Mack Brown is bringing in Gene Chizik to try and fix their very broken defense.

It’s hard to say if that will work, though. Howell is off for the NFL, which means that Brown needs to find a new quarterback on top of everything else. In a lot of ways, he’s entering year four needing to rebuild from the ground up again.

Week 5: BYE

A little early in the season, but it’s always good to get healthy.

Week 6: BYU (Shamrock Series)

Alright, insert a joke about the Catholics and Mormons playing a game in Las Vegas: Here. With that out of the way, this game itself is an exciting one. BYU has found a formula for success under head coach Kalani Sitake, with two straight top-20 finishes. Expect BYU to be a good team again in 2022.

This will also be the Shamrock Series Game. Notre Dame has never lost a Shamrock Series game, but this might just be their biggest challenge to date.

Week 7: Stanford

Notre Dame’s rivalry with Stanford continues in 2022, this time in South Bend during the middle of the season. At one point, this was a major game, one which the Irish often lost. Stanford coach David Shaw seems to have lost some of that magic, though, and the Cardinal have been struggling in recent years. As Notre Dame has improved in that same time, this game has become much less competitive.
