3 Players Notre Dame football could still target in the Transfer Portal

Josh Newton

  • Cornerback, ULM

Notre Dame’s need for cornerback depth isn’t going away any time soon. Jarrick Bernard-Converse would be great, but he’s also a bit of a stretch. A player like Josh Newton might be more realistic, at least at this stage of the recruiting cycle, while also being able to provide Notre Dame with much-needed help on the defensive side of the ball.

Josh Newton has been playing for the last three seasons at ULM, which is in the Sun Belt. Some people are automatically going to turn their noses at a player trying to move up from a Group of Five conference. In particular, the MAC, C-USA, and Sun Belt often get looked down on by college football elitists. At the same time, you have to admit that Cain Madden was able to start at Notre Dame despite originally being at Marshall.

Think about it like this. Some four or five-star players come to Notre Dame football and never work out. They don’t see the field, and then they transfer to a smaller program, where there is more of an opportunity to play. This is because those players were misevaluated. That’s easy to do when we’re talking about sixteen and seventeen year old kids.

It also works in both directions. Some players should be in the Power Five, who are overlooked and end up in the G5. One of the things that the transfer portal does is it allows players to correct these errors, and play up a level.

Notre Dame needs help at corner, and Newton can provide that. He has two years worth of eligibility left too, which means that this corner with solid size at 5ft 11in, can at the very least provide depth while Freeman gets his recruits through the door. On his career, Newton has played 30 games, has 84 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 15 pass break ups.

Notre Dame is an opportunity that Josh Newton never would have had before, and Josh Newton is a player Notre Dame needs to help fill gaps on their defense.
