Notre Dame football: 3 defensive players who need to be great in 2022

No. 2: Brandon Joseph

As we stated earlier, the biggest loss for this Notre Dame football team on defense this season will be Kyle Hamilton, widely considered the best safety in the country last year. Injured during the USC game, Hamilton was missed down the stretch, but the Irish were able to win games without him, finishing the regular season with a seven-game winning streak.

In 2022, Hamilton will start his NFL career, and in his place, the Irish were able to get an elite player via the transfer portal in Brandon Joseph. An All-American for Northwestern last season, Joseph is talented enough to step in and fill Hamilton’s shoes, and he should have revenge on his mind, as Ohio State beat his team in the Big Ten title game two years ago.

The addition of Joseph solved one of the bigger problems on this roster heading into next season, and he should be able to come in and be the same standout player he was at Northwestern. The Irish will face a tough passing attack in Week 1 against Ohio State, so we will see early on just how good Joseph is.
