Notre Dame Football: Grading the Class of 2022 after NSD

Offensive Recruits

Notre Dame football brought in just ten offensive players on the offensive side of the ball. Nine of those players were four-star recruits, while one was a three-star. Five offensive linemen, one running back, one quarterback, one wide receiver, and two tight ends.

Broadly speaking, there has to be some concern that Notre Dame only added one wide receiver in this class. Given how few receivers are currently on the roster, this might be an issue. The Irish don’t have many wide receivers currently on their roster, so this was a position of need going into this offseason. It really hasn’t been addressed. On the plus side, Tobias Merriweather is a very promising 4-star recruit with great size.

Two young tight ends, meanwhile, will be helpful for Notre Dame. Michael Mayer is likely to go pro after next season at Notre Dame. That will leave a gap that needs to be filled in the starting tight end slot. Eli Raridon was an excellent recruit to land out of Iowa, while Holden Staes can play as a tight end or potentially kick out to wide receiver. With five incoming offensive linemen, there shouldn’t be any depth issues going forward.

Overall, the new coaching staff didn’t do a bad job on the offensive side of the ball. The class just doesn’t have any players who stand out as amazing options to turn towards. This could be the turnover, but it could also just be a result of how they prioritized their class.
