Notre Dame football: Most exciting 21 moments from the 2021 season

No. 12: TD and 2pt Conversion late against Virginia Tech

Anytime you go into Lane Stadium as the road team it is going to be a tough environment to play in, and in 2021, the Irish were struggling a bit going in. Sure, they had won all but one of their games, but they were not blowing anybody away, even lowly teams like Toledo.

That is why when they went down late to the Hokies, it seemed as if the Irish season was going to go into the toilet. They played Virginia Tech the week before their bye week, and after the bye, dates with UNC and USC were on the horizon, possible losses if the team continued to play the way they did early on.

However, this was a season-defininig moment for the Irish, as it kept their CFP hopes alive, and set them to the bye week on a high note. Down 29-21 in the fourth quarter, Jack Coan hit Avery Davis for a four-yard touchdown, setting the stage for a crucial two-point conversion.

Coan connected with Kevin Austin Jr. for the two points, tying the game at 29, and allowing the opportunity for Jonathan Doerer to win it later in the fourth.
