Notre Dame football: Most exciting 21 moments from the 2021 season

No. 8: Jonathan Doerer with the opening week GW field goal vs FSU

In Week 1, the Notre Dame football team went down to Tallahassee to take on the Florida State Seminoles, who were playing with a heavy heart in their first game since the passing of former legendary head coach, Bobby Bowden. Fans of both teams were in for a treat in this matchup, as it was way closer than the oddsmakers figured it would be.

Outside of Jack Coan setting records, and Michael Mayer staking his claim as the best tight end in the country, the teams went on a see-saw battle that would go into overtime. An 18-0 run by the Seminoles in the fourth quarter would force the extra frame, where Florida State would miss their field goal attempt in overtime.

The Irish got the ball and would only need a field goal of their own to win the game, and after Florida State tried to ice him, Jonathan Doerer booted a 41-yard field goal for the win. Doerer would come up big for the Irish time and time again in 2021, capping a terrific career for him in South Bend.
