No. 3: Coan hits Mayer for the game-winning TD against Toledo after dislocating finger

The game against the Toledo Rockets should never have been as close as it turned out to be. It was early in the season for this Notre Dame football team, and the offensive line was struggling, as well as the defense.

In a dogfight to the end, the Irish actually saw themselves in the grasp of losing, as the Rockets held a 29-24 lead with under two minutes left in the game. After dislocating his finger, and having it popped back into place, Jack Coan continued to build his legend for the Irish, hitting Kevin Austin Jr. for 30-plus yards to get the ball rolling on a late drive.

Two consecutive penalties by the Toledo defense put the Irish all the way down to the Rockets’ 18-yard line, where Coan hit Michael Mayer for a game-winning score.

A two-point conversion on an Avery Davis pass to Kyren Williams would put Notre Dame up 32-29, and a forced fumble by Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa received by JD Bertrand would clinch win No. 2.
