Notre Dame football: Most exciting 21 moments from the 2021 season

No. 14: Doerer’s game-winner against Virginia Tech in Primetime

In the last regular season game before their bye week, the Notre Dame football team went down to Blackburg, Virginia to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies. Playing inside a tough environment and a packed house at Lane Stadium, the Irish fell down early to the Hokies, as it was 10-0 midway through the second quarter.

Down 10-0, the Irish orchestrated two long touchdown drives, one capped off by a Tyler Buchner run, and another by Kyren Wiliams. A Virginia Tech field goal made it a one-score game before the the half, but the party was just getting started in this matchup.

Up 21-16, it looked like wheels were falling off for the Irish, as the Hokies got a pick-six, and then a second Buchner interception set up a second score for Virginia Tech. That put the Irish down eight with under four minutes left, but the game was far from over. Jack Coan connected with Avery Davis for a touchdown, and then Kevin Austin Jr. for the two-point, tying the game up with two-and-a-half minutes left.

After forcing a three-and-out, the Irish went on a seven-play drive thanks to two nice passes from Coan to both Braden Lenzy and George Takacs, setting the stage for Jonathan Doerer to blast the game-winning field goal in Primetime on ESPN to give the Irish a 32-29 victory heading into the break.
