Notre Dame football: 3 things Marcus Freeman must do next

No 1: Figure out the QB spot

The Notre Dame football program had the luxury of a multi-year starter in Ian Book before he left the program for the NFL after the 2020 college football season. Graduate transfer Jack Coan stepped in as the starter in 2021, spelled by true freshman Tyler Buchner, which means that the starting job is once again up for grabs this offseason.

Looking at the quarterback room, the Irish have a bunch of talent coming back, including Buchner, Drew Pyne, and an exciting true freshman in Steve Angeli from Bergen Catholic (NJ) High School. Buchner showed last season that he could be counted on in crucial moments, as did Pyne, who stepped in against Wisconsin and led the Irish to a victory inside Soldier Field.

As it stands, I believe that Buchner gained the trust of Rees last season, and he will go into the spring and summer as the presumed starting quarterback. However, Pyne is no pushover, and Angeli is a highly-touted prospect, so once again, the quarterback battle is going to be must-see business for the second straight offseason.
