Notre Dame football: Top returning players on defense in 2022

Cam Hart, Cornerback

One area of this Notre Dame defense that is a bit worrisome going into next season is cornerback, though they have an absolute star returning in Cam Hart. Many felt that Hart would leave the Irish for the NFL this offseason, as he was seen as a Day 2 pick, but he will be back in the fold this fall.

That is great news for this defense, as Clarence Lewis took a bit of a step backward last season, but is expected to start for a third straight year in 2022. Outside of those two, it is anybody’s guess as to what the depth chart will look like, as some second-year corners should get their shot this spring and summer.

Hart is someone who is going to draw the No. 1 wide receiver every week, and he proved in 2021 that he can be a shutdown guy for this Irish defense. The Notre Dame secondary is already losing Kyle Hamilton, making Hart returning even more important for this defensive backfield this season.
