The Notre Dame football team kicked off spring practices last week, and here, we look at some key position battles to watch this spring.

The Notre Dame football team is back at it, kicking off their spring practices on St. Patrick’s Day as they begin their quest for a stellar 2022 college football season. The Irish went 11-1 during the regular season, but lost their bowl game last year, so all eyes will be Marcus Freeman and his staff heading into Week 1 against Ohio State.

For now, the focus is on spring practices, and there are plenty of position battles to keep an eye on as we inch closer to the Blue-Gold Game. Here, we focus on the offense.

QB: Tyler Buchner vs Drew Pyne

We will start with the big one, as Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne will be locked in a battle for the starting quarterback job over the next five months. In fact, the competition is so close that the two could be battling it out all the way until the week before the Irish take on Ohio State in Week 1.

Both quarterbacks bring their own skillset to the position, and both have shown the ability to lead this program in the past. Buchner seems to have a leg-up on Pyne, as he was turned too more often in 2021, but Pyne is the one the Irish tapped to lead them to victory against Wisconsin when Jack Coan went down due to injury.
