Notre Dame football Pro Day: 3 Noteworthy Performances

Jack Coan

No one watched Jack Coan last season and thought, “Now, there’s an NFL quarterback!” They thought, “Now, there’s an inconsistent quarterback who has some decent talent and good leadership skills.”

So, while Coan has some intangibles that NFL teams are going to be looking for, his actual skillset is questionable, no matter what Tommy Rees has said. At the Pro Day, though, he looked like he had the raw talent needed to be an NFL quarterback too.

It was a great day for Jack Coan, especially when it came time to throw the ball around. After all, his athleticism in something like the 40-yard dash will never be all that impressive. In shorts and a comfortable setting with receivers who he is comfortable working with, though, Coan was able to stand out.

He was, for the most part, throwing to Kevin Austin Jr. and Kyren Williams, and the timing and chemistry between the two sides were clear from the start. In particular, Coan was solid throwing the ball deep, extending it downfield. He also, as opposed to the NFL Combine, knew what to expect with these wide receivers because of their chemistry.

This undoubtedly helped him to have a good passing day. However, it also showed scouts how well Coan can work with his teammates and showed that chemistry is a good thing in its own right.

Now, these were all drills. There wasn’t any pressure or secondary to read. That’s always the knock on a quarterback at a Pro Day. At the same time, what if he was inaccurate here? That would be embarrassing and undoubtedly keep him from getting drafted. It also does happen to some quarterbacks when they feel pressure from NFL scouts.

That didn’t happen to Coan, which deserves to be celebrated.
