The Notre Dame football team has veteran starters at the cornerback positions in 2022, but one true freshman could end up being a star when all is said and done.

For the Notre Dame football team, cornerback is a position group that is going to be a question mark this season. Sure, they have veteran talent in the starting lineup, as Cam Hart is a potential Day 1 or Day 2 NFL Draft pick, and Clarence Lewis has started since his true freshman season.

The big question is what is behind them, as it is a mix of players who have not gotten much playing time for the Irish, and a couple of true freshmen. One of those true freshmen, Jaden Mickey, is showing the coaching staff that Hart and Lewis may have a future star playing behind them this season.

Mickey has been all over the field this spring, putting together some incredible tape during practice, and it will be interesting to see where he fits when all is said and done. Sure, he is only a true freshman, but he has not looked like one and could be rocketing up this depth chart as we head into the Blue-Gold Game next month.

Notre Dame football to be elite on defense in 2022

Hart is a star at the cornerback spot and will be expected to lead this young group into battle every weekend. At safety, the Irish are loaded once again this season, as they replaced All-American Kyle Hamilton with another All-American, Brandon Joseph.

Outside of Joseph, the safety spot has veteran talent, with Houston Griffith returning for another go-around in South Bend.

Upfront, the defensive line could be one of the best in the country, as they have elite talent in the interior, and coming off the edge. At linebacker, the talented is strong and deep, and with a linebacker guru at head coach in Marcus Freeman, you can expect this position group to be as good as any next season.

The Irish are in a solid position on defense thanks to the fact they have veteran starters at every position and talent like Mickey learning from them daily. Eventually, Hart will head to the NFL, and Mickey has the talent to come in and soften the loss in a big way.
