Notre Dame football: 3 reasons Tyler Buchner could dominate in 2022

Playing behind an elite offensive line

Early on in the 2021 college football season, the Irish were getting terrible play from their offensive line, especially after Blake Fisher went down in the opener with an injury that would force him to miss the rest of the regular season. After struggling to find the right combination up front, Brian Kelly finally landed on a new left side, with Joe Alt playing tackle, and Andrew Kristofic at guard.

From there, the Irish dominated in the trenches, and with Jarrett Patterson passing on the NFL for one more go-around in South Bend, the entire starting cast is back in 2022. For a young quarterback getting the starting job for the first time, that is paramount, as he played behind this crew last season, and will have that familiarity in the huddle.

We also saw the Irish offense look much better both running the ball and through the air, specifically with Coan having the time to take more shots downfield. Buchner has the arm talent to make all the throws, and he is going to have more than enough confidence to stand in the pocket with this crew protecting him.
