The Notre Dame football team must replace a star in running back Kyren Williams in 2022, but they may have the right player to do so.

The Notre Dame football team had the luxury of Kyren Williams being their starting running back over the last two seasons. During that time, Williams posted back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns, becoming one of only five running backs in the history of the Notre Dame football program to do so.

Now, as Williams begins his journey at the NFL level, the Irish will be tasked with replacing him, and one player returning is starting to get major national buzz. The 2021 recruiting class brought in both Logan Diggs and Audric Estime in terms of the running back position, and while we got to see flashes from Estime in Year 1, Diggs emerged as a potential star.

Now, the two will battle it out with Chris Tyree to see who earns the feature back role left vacant by Williams, but one major publication feels Diggs should be the guy. In fact, they listed him as one of the 22 rising stars in college football heading into next season.

Notre Dame football star ranked No. 5 rising star

Not only was Diggs listed among the 22 rising stars, but he cracked the top-5, coming in as the No. 5 rising star to watch next season. That is a bit of a shock, as while Diggs certainly proved he could perform in a big way at the collegiate level, he is still a bit of a work in progress.

According to Brad Crawford of 247Sports.com, Diggs is getting the attention of the coaching staff in a big way this spring, and that could bleed over into him being the No. 1 guy in South Bend next season. With a question mark at quarterback, finding the right guy to shoulder the load in the run game will be paramount in 2022.

The truth is, the Irish offense has a legitimate shot to be quite explosive next season, and Diggs is going to play a big part in that whether or not he is the starting running back. With eyes on the Irish going into next year, this is a monster tip of the hat to Diggs, who showed he could succeed in both the run and passing game as a true freshman.

Maybe the best is yet to come.
