The Notre Dame football team will be without Tyler Buchner in the Blue-Gold Game Saturday, which is a golden opportunity for Steve Angeli.

Going into this offseason, the main storyline surrounding the Notre Dame football team was who would step in and be the starting quarterback in 2022. Last year, Jack Coan came in as a graduate transfer and took the reins from Ian Book, the all-time winningest quarterback in program history.

Coan did an outstanding job in his only season with the Irish, pushing them to an 11-1 regular-season record, and then setting a Fiesta Bowl passing mark in his final game. It was the kind of effort the program needed in what was considered a year where incoming freshman Tyler Buchner needed time to develop.

Well, Buchner did sit behind Coan, but got a ton of experience, as did Drew Pyne, the player he is battling for the starting job this spring and summer. The Blue-Gold Game this Saturday was supposed to be a matchup between both guys, but with Buchner out, Pyne will play for both teams.

Notre Dame football to lean on Steve Angeli in Blue-Gold Game

While Pyne is going to play for both teams, we should see true freshman Steve Angeli, a four-star prospect from Bergen Catholic (NJ) High School. A sought-after prospect, Angeli has the ability, like Buchner, to get the job done with his arm, and his legs, and is a very accurate passer for someone his age.

We should get to see a lot of him on Saturday, and as Buchner did in the spring game last year, the hope is that he is further along in his development than would be expected at this point in his college career.

For Angeli, this is a chance to not only show the fans what he can do but also the coaches, who are very much in on bringing in five-star signal-caller Dante Moore for the 2023 recruiting cycle. Angeli is another quarterback looking to prove he can be a multi-year option at the position, and Saturday, we will see where he stands as he looks to lock down at least the No. 3 spot on the depth chart.
