Notre Dame football: Irish have to figure out QB situation soon
By Brad Weiss
The Notre Dame football team could do something special in 2022, but they have to figure out the quarterback situation sooner than later.
In less than four months, the Notre Dame football team will head to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes. In a must-see matchup, the Irish have enough talent to go into the Horseshoe and beat the Buckeyes, a team that many feels will be one of the final four teams standing, and a member of the College Football Playoff.
At quarterback, the Buckeyes are loaded, as CJ Stroud is someone who many believe will be a Heisman Trophy finalist this upcoming season. He has lost some key weapons, as both Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson were picked in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but key weapons remain.
For the Irish, they will counter with either Tyler Buchner or Drew Pyne, two players battling it out for the starting quarterback job. True freshman Steve Angeli also threw his hat in the ring during the Blue-Gold Game, so at the most important position in sports, a most important decision has to be made sooner than later.
Notre Dame football could use multiple quarterbacks
Last year, Buchner, Pyne, and Jack Coan all saw time, but Coan was the unquestioned starter. Buchner proved as a true freshman that the stage was not too big for him, and Pyne came in and relieved an injured Coan against Wisconsin, leading the Irish to a win inside Soldier Field.
In 2022, there has to be some clarity going into the summer months, as they have a huge matchup in Week 1 waiting for them. There cannot be a wait-and-see approach when it comes to this starting job, as the Irish have to figure out a gameplan to beat an offense in Ohio State that could be one of the best in the country this season.
There is a saying that says if you have more than one option at QB1, then you do not have a legitimate QB1, and that cannot be the case. Notre Dame football needs to name their starting quarterback sooner than later, but whoever starts, you can expect both backups to see the field, maybe not against Ohio State, but down the road.
