Notre Dame football: Where ESPN ranks 2022 Irish QB situation
By Brad Weiss
Recently, ESPN ranked all QB situations entering the 2022 college football season, so where do the Notre Dame football signal-callers land?
The Notre Dame football team has questions on the offensive side of the ball but none is bigger than the question they have at the quarterback position. Quarterback is the most important position in all of sports, and the battle between Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne will not be settled until the summer months.
Recently, David M. Hale from ESPN put out his ranking of all quarterback situations going into the 2022 college football season, and they spoke about the decision ahead of Marcus Freeman and Tommy Rees. The Irish situation was put in Tier 10, nowhere close to where an ideal program should be, but also not a spot where they have no talent at the position.
Here is what the piece had to say about this collection of programs, which included Notre Dame, LSU, Texas A&M, UNC, and Washington:
"All five teams have real potential for 2022 if they can identify a burgeoning star at QB. There are ample options, but it’s impossible to say how many will ultimately find the right answer."
Notre Dame football needs to decide on a starting QB sooner than later
For the Irish, the decision in terms of the position group has to be done sooner than later, as the closer Notre Dame football gets to the Ohio State game, the more important it is to know what kind of game plan they are going the game with. The Irish have a legitimate chance to beat the Buckeyes, and put together a signature win right out of the gate, but when it comes to Ohio State, there is no question who their signal-caller will be.
Notre Dame football has a real chance to be special this season, and both Buchner or Pyne could win a lot of games for the program. There is also a chance true freshman Steve Angeli sneaks his name in the mix, so expect this position group to get a ton of attention this summer, but for the coaching staff, naming a starter has to be priority No. 1.
