Notre Dame football got a good look at Steve Angeli during the Blue-Gold Game, but will he see the field in 2022?

The Notre Dame football team had their Blue-Gold Game a few months back, and when it came to the quarterback position, it was supposed to be a battle between Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne. Those are the two players in the lead to replace Jack Coan as the program’s starting quarterback in 2022, but neither took advantage of the opportunity.

As Pyne struggled in a big way, and with Buchner not even playing, true freshman Steve Angeli got a chance to show the Notre Dame faithful what he could do. The product of Bergen Catholic (NJ) High School did not disappoint, leading his team to victory, including scoring the game-winning touchdown.

A four-star recruit coming out of BC, Angeli has the goods to be a very good quarterback at the collegiate level, but is he going to get a shot in a real game in 2022?

Notre Dame football could turn to Angeli in 2022

Last season, offensive coordinator Tommy Rees had no problem turning to a true freshman at times, as Buchner got a lot of playing time as a backup to Coan. While Pyne was considered the No. 2 on the roster, it was Buchner that was called on time and time again, and he showed he could get the job done at the collegiate level.

If Buchner does earn the starting job, Angeli could certainly be used in certain situations, as he is not afraid to run the ball, and has a rocket for a right arm. Notre Dame football has a serious question mark at the quarterback spot, and with neither Buchner nor Pyne grabbing hold of the starting job, Angeli is going to get some reps all summer long.

With CJ Carr coming in a few years, and Buchner only a true sophomore, it will be interesting to see where Angeli fits in the mix. However, he showed during the Blue-Gold Game that he is the kind of kid who is going to take advantage of opportunities, and it would not surprise me one bit for him to have an impact at some point during the 2022 season.
