With Notre Dame football turning to another new starting quarterback in 2022, Michael Mayer will prove to be the ultimate security blanket.

For the third straight season, the Notre Dame football team will trot out a new starting quarterback in Week 1. While many big-time programs schedule cupcakes early on, t he first game of the season is not going to be an easy one, as Notre Dame football travels to Ohio to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Looking at the college football landscape, these are two of the top-6 teams in the country, which makes this matchup one of the best of the entire 2022 slate. For the Irish, the starting quarterback job will come down to a battle between Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne, both capable of leading this team to plenty of victories this Fall.

However, they are both first-time starters, which means they are going to rely on their most proven playmakers, especially early on. When it comes to this Notre Dame football team on offense, there is no better player than tight end Michael Mayer, who will prove to be the ultimate security blanket.

In Week 1, playing inside Ohio Stadium, the elite players are going to have to step up, and for either of these two quarterbacks to have a solid day, they need to get Mayer involved early and often.

Notre Dame football star is the best TE in the country

Not only is Mayer the ultimate security blanket for the Irish, but he is considered by many to be the best tight end in the country. He is a do-everything tight end that is likely to be a top-10 pick in  the 2023 NFL Draft, this after two dominant seasons as a true freshman and sophomore.

There is a lot that has to go Notre Dame’s way if they want to win in Week 1, or even challenge for a College Football Playoff berth. Sure, there are a lot of questions on offense, but Mayer is not one of them, and he has a chance to do a number on the Buckeyes on the national stage this Fall.
