Notre Dame football 2022 Fall camp position preview: Quarterback

Who is Back?

The Irish have some veteran talent returning at the position group, headlined by Buchner, who was counted on in a big way during his true freshman season a year ago. Buchner can get the job done with his arm, and his legs, which is why he is considered the top option going into the summer months.

However, there is another capable quarterback on the roster as well, as Drew Pyne was the QB2 behind Jack Coan last season. It was Pyne who stepped in when Coan was injured inside Soldier Field against Wisconsin, so there is no doubt that Tommy Rees feels he can win with him under center.

Ron Powlus III, a legacy quarterback also returns, but he is more of a depth guy for the Irish. I do not see him seeing the field at all during his collegiate career in terms of meaningful snaps, especially with high-level quarterback talent coming in this year, as well as in the future.
