The Notre Dame football program has yet to name a starter for the season opener against Ohio State, but all signs point to Tyler Buchner getting the job.

One look at the 2022 Notre Dame football team and it is clear that they are going to be a very tough out for every team on their schedule. The roster is loaded with first-round talent, and plenty of depth at the most important positions, and the team has a hungry coaching staff looking to make a significant impact in Year 1 together.

Sure, the schedule is daunting, including a Week 1 battle against the Ohio State Buckeyes, but based on pure talent, Notre Dame football should be able to hang with them. If a few bounces go their way, there is no reason why the Irish can’t escape Ohio Stadium with their first win of the season.

To do so, they will need to get great play from their quarterback, and right now, head coach Marcus Freeman has yet to name a starter. The battle has been raging between Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne, two men who got a chance to show what they could do last season playing behind Jack Coan.

While there is a battle going on for the spot, all signs point to Tyler Buchner getting the nod, and I believe he is ready to lead this program into their next era of football.

Notre Dame football is in good hands with Buchner at quarterback

After not playing his senior year of high school due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Buchner stepped right in as a true freshman and had some memorable moments in 2021. His ability to make plays with his arm and his legs is what separates him from the pack, and Notre Dame football is going to need that kind of versatility against a tough Ohio State defense.

Making his first collegiate start against the No. 2 team in the country is not going to be easy, but Buchner showed last season that he does not get rattled by pressure. Not many kids could come into a program as prestigious as Notre Dame and do what he did last season, so that should give him a leg up on Pyne as well.

You have to think this decision will be announced soon, as the Buckeyes are right on the horizon, and when all is said and done, Buchner is the one who helps give Marcus Freeman his first win as the head coach of the Irish.
