The Notre Dame football team has some depth issues at running back, but that only means a big season could be coming from Chris Tyree.

One of the key gets for the Notre Dame football program in the 2020 recruiting cycle was running back Chris Tyree, a dynamic player from Chester, Virginia. Ranked the No. 1 all-purpose back in the country by 247Sports, as well as the No. 70 player overall, Tyree was expected to make a major impact in South Bend.

However, over the last few seasons, Tyree has played the backup role to Kyren Williams, a punishing runner who posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. There have been moments of brilliance, and we have been able to see what kind of skill set he has, but it has only been in small samples.

In 2022, it is Tyree’s chance to show what he can do, and despite his size, the Irish are going to lean on him in a big way. Logan Diggs is injured to start the season, and Jadarian Price will miss his entire true freshman season, so the running back job is his to start the year, with true sophomore Audric Estime also getting reps as well.

Tyree has everything you look for in a breakout running back, including the ability to make plays in the passing game out of the backfield, so the expectation is that the running game will not skip a beat with Williams gone to the NFL.

Notre Dame football should be explosive on offense in 2022

Tyler Buchner is likely to get the nod as the starting quarterback in 2022, this if he can beat out Drew Pyne, who relieved Jack Coan and beat Wisconsin last season. With a new quarterback in place, the need for veteran playmakers is paramount, and that increases the likelihood that Tyree should be the guy at running back in 2022.

Overall, the Notre Dame football team should be elite on the offensive side of the ball this upcoming season and should see Tyree make plenty of highlight-reel plays when all is said and done. He was once considered a can’t-miss recruit, and in 2022, he gets to prove that to be true.
