Notre Dame football: Tyler Buchner was the right choice as QB1
By Brad Weiss
The Notre Dame football team named Tyler Buchner their starting quarterback on Saturday, and that was the right choice heading into Week 1.
This past weekend, the Notre Dame football program made the choice that the fan base has been waiting for, as they named their starting quarterback. The battle raged on between Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne since the end of last season, where both of them had a role behind starter Jack Coan.
Now, the mystery has been solved, as the Irish named true sophomore Tyler Buchner their starting quarterback on Saturday. It was a tremendous battle between both players, and before all is said and done, both are likely to play a role in the team’s successes in 2022.
For Buchner, this journey started last season, when he stepped in and showed flashes of brilliance behind Coan. Despite not playing his senior year of high school due to COVID-19 laws in California, Buchner showed no rush and performed in a big way on the biggest stages.
Now, he gets the chance to lead the Irish into one of their biggest matchups in some time in the regular season, a road battle against Ohio State. Notre Dame football made the right choice with Buchner, as he is a dual-threat guy who can hurt a defense in so many ways, and he certainly earned this opportunity.
Notre Dame football has its issues on offense
Of course, while naming Buchner the starter was a joyous thing this weekend, the team also suffered a significant loss, as Avery Davis tore his ACL at practice on Friday. Davis was supposed to lead a very thin and young group at the position this season, but will now have to make his impact on the sidelines, and in the locker room.
One area the Irish are solid in, though, is the offensive line, as they return one of the best groups in the country. Buchner also has a budding star in Lorenzo Styles Jr. at wideout, very capable running backs, and the best tight end in the country, so overall, this has the chance to be a very potent offense in South Bend in 2022.
