Notre Dame vs Clemson Best Bets and Longshot Picks

Notre Dame +3.5 (-105)

Notre Dame looks much improved in recent weeks after a rocky start to the season, while Clemson barely hung on against Syracuse and Florida State. Keep in mind that the Fighting Irish just walloped the Orange on the road, and I love catching Notre Dame at anything over a field goal.

These teams are more evenly matched than you might think. Clemson ranks 16th nationally in opponent yards per play (4.7), but Notre Dame is close by at 26th (4.9). The gap is small on offense too, as Clemson is 59th in yards per play (5.6) while the Fighting Irish are 71st (5.3).

Notre Dame’s offense has been stellar of late though, scoring at least 41 points in consecutive weeks. With Tigers’ QB DJ Uiagalelei’s struggles (two interceptions against Syracuse), I think Notre Dame has the edge.

The Fighting Irish are 5-1 outright in their last six games as home underdogs and I expect that trend to continue in a close game.

Notre Dame vs Clemson Over 44.5 Points (-110)

While each defense has an advantage, I do think this total is a bit too low. Each of the last three matchups between these teams closed with a total above 50, with two closing at 58 or higher. As Notre Dame’s offense is showing life, I think both teams will find success moving the ball.

Fighting Irish tight end Michael Mayer is an elite player, averaging 12.3 yards per catch with 580 yards and six TDs. I foresee a big game from him, as he’s cleared 110 receiving yards in two of his last four games with three TDs.

Will Shipley and Clemson’s offense are a talented bunch too, though, and Notre Dame allowed at least 21 points in each of their last two contests.

The over is 4-2 in the Tigers’ previous six games and hit in each of Notre Dame’s last two. I’m trusting these trends to continue this weekend.
