Notre Dame men’s basketball takes down Southern Indiana
By Tyler Kruse
Notre Dame men’s basketball starts the season 3-0 with their comfortable victory over the Southern Indian Screaming Eagles squad.
Notre Dame took down Southern Indiana by a score of 82-70. After being named ACC player of the week, Nate Laszewski picked up where he left off and helped lead the Irish to victory. Laszewski went 2-4 from deep and 6-10 overall, continuing his blistering hot shooting from the field. He finished with 18 points, 10 boards, and 2 blocks. The young guys in Lubin and Starling struggled a bit in this one shooting a combined 6-16 from the field. However, given some time, I expect those two to be significant contributors on both ends of the floor for Notre Dame men’s basketball throughout the season.
Trey Wertz also played a massive role in the victory as he led the team in scoring, dropping a fantastic 20 points in the win. Wertz, who has even better shooting numbers than Laszewski so far in the early going, was 6-12 in this contest. The Irish, as a team, made 23 out of 28 free-throw attempts, securing this victory at the line. They were 22 out of 25 at one point and went 1-3 to finish the game.
While the Irish seemed to struggle in the first couple of games, they looked to have far more control throughout this one. With all due respect to Southern Indiana, this is a team they should handle without issue. They did just that. They did just that. The Irish looked exactly as one could expect in the first two games of the season – rusty. The team will only continue to progress as the season moves on. It’ll be interesting to see how the team responds when faced with a test against a school that could give them some trouble. St. Bonaventure and Michigan State will be able to do just that in the coming weeks.
To finish up this week, the Irish will host the Lipscomb Bisons this Friday. In another game where you’d hope to see the Irish handle the competition without much of a struggle, Notre Dame men’s basketball will be aiming to start the season 4-0. However, with the play they’ve been getting from Laszewski and Wertz, they should only improve as the season progresses. Once Starling and Lubin feel more comfortable on the court, the team can be very dangerous in ACC play.
