After what I’d deem a successful year outside of a few games, the lead quarterback for Notre Dame football, Drew Pyne, enters the transfer portal.

This one comes as a bit of a shock at first glance. For the most part, Pyne did a tremendous job filling in for the injured Tyler Buchner this year. He completed 64.6% of his passes for 2021 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. As one of his biggest critics at times, we were always quick to commend the job he did thrust into the starting role for Notre Dame football. Unfortunately, Drew had a few abysmal games that caused some fans to turn sour on him.

There’s an immense gut feeling here that Tommy Rees and Marcus Freeman are pushing hard to land a quarterback in the portal. Frankly, it now becomes more crucial than ever before. With Drew, you had a proven commodity, maybe not the perfect commodity but a proven one nonetheless. Something tells me Notre Dame is close to lining something up with a top transfer. While I don’t want to say Notre Dame isn’t playing by the rules, it’s more than possible the person still needs to enter the portal.

With Drew likely out of South Bend, the need to land an immediately playable quarterback significantly increased. Hudson Card is the first name that comes to mind of rumored entrants or those that have already entered the portal. Sam Hartman, Devin Leary, and Brennan Armstrong are others to watch. Again, not all of those guys have entered but expect moves to be made.

After quite the shocker from this Notre Dame football program, I expect an even bigger shock to follow. Again it’s just a gut feeling, but there is a big fish out there, and Notre Dame is zeroing in on them. It’s now a necessity more than anything, though, as the game experience on the roster for next year is nearly nothing. Freeman and Rees need to capitalize.

Last but certainly not least, a massive thanks to Drew Pyne for giving it is all while with Notre Dame football. It’s not easy leading such a storied program but he never backed down from the challenge. Best of luck, Drew!
