Frankly, I couldn’t care less about thank-you and goodbye posts, especially from coaches for my favorite sports teams. Though, I find it odd that Tommy Rees spent 1/3rd of his life as a member of Notre Dame football and leaves without as much as a public announcement. Again, he doesn’t owe the fans anything, especially given that half of them didn’t care for Rees as a coordinator; that said, it’s odd.

By now, everyone knows Tommy Rees is the offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide under legendary coach Nick Saban. Nobody should blame the young man for taking that job, it’s not often you get to work with the best in your respective industry, and when you get the chance, you take it.

Given how Rees has left the Notre Dame football program, I’m not confident in saying even half of the fans out there would welcome him back. My guess is that he doesn’t care about a burned bridge, with fans specifically, and his hopes and dreams lie with the NFL. I hope that’s true for his sake because not many Irish fans will be Tommy Rees fans moving forward. It’s petty, it’s unfortunate, but it’s simply the truth.

By definition, it’s a lateral move for Tommy. However, I’d argue it’s a step up from Notre Dame to Alabama because of Nick Saban. Still, given his lack of experience and how often the Irish struggled on offense, it’ll be interesting to see what happens with Rees and his career. Much of his future is riding on success at Alabama in the SEC.

While I don’t think it’s necessary to do, I’ve seen fans on social media question the way in which Tommy left. Again, I’ll always thank a coach or player should they send a goodbye or thank-you post; though I don’t think they’re necessary, many fans enjoy them.

First as a player, then as an assistant, and finally as the primary offensive play-caller, Tommy Rees owes a lot to Notre Dame football for giving him chances. Not many guys get the opportunities coach Rees had at such a young age to accomplish their dreams. Best of luck, Tommy.
