The other half of that dynamic backfield was the man affectionately known as “the Bus,” Jerome Bettis. Bettis’ NFL career was so dominant that history will view him through the lens of an NFL great, specifically because of his stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers. With that said, though, his dominance in South Bend was historical.

Bettis set the Notre Dame touchdown record with 20 in one season (16 rushing, four receiving) during his sophomore season, and in three seasons with the Fighting Irish, Bettis’ teams amassed 29 wins. With two Sugar Bowl wins and an Orange Bowl triumph during his time in South Bend, Bettis was one of the all-time winners in Notre Dame’s backfield.
