Notre Dame and Marshall have played once in history — Week 2 of the 2022 season to be exact — and the Fighting Irish suffered their second straight loss to start the Marcus Freeman era in South Bend after an 11-point loss to Ohio State in Week 1. During that game, the Thundering Herd overcame a fourth-quarter deficit to stun the home team in front of a home crowd that thought they were seeing the fall of an institution.
Of course, rumors of Notre Dame’s demise were greatly exaggerated, and by season’s end, the Fighting Irish had knocked off the likes of North Carolina, BYU, and Clemson en route to an underwhelming but acceptable 9-4 record. Still, it cannot be stated just how devastating the Marshall loss was at the time.
Truthfully, the Thundering Herd may have hit Paydirt with the upset. There could be a rematch down the line so the Fighting Irish can get their win back. Until they do, though, Marshall is part of the Notre Dame football program’s infamous six opponents they claim no sovereignty over.
