Notre Dame football vs the MAC
When it comes to the volume of teams that Notre Dame is undefeated against, the MAC stands out by a hair’s breath. In all, there are six teams in this conference that the Fighting Irish have managed to take down without ever losing.
For the most part, Notre Dame has accomplished that feat simply by not playing any of these teams all that often.
Western Michigan: No team in the MAC has played the Golden Domers as much as the Broncos without logging a win. Of course, of the three losses, two of them were more than 100 years ago. The two teams first met up in 1919 and then again in 1920. Western Michigan was hammered both times 53-0 and then 42-0. The two schools locked horns again in 2010. It wasn’t quite the same kind of blowout, but the Broncos fell 44-20.
Akron: The Zips have faced off against Notre Dame precisely one time. In 1910, they lost 51-0. Perhaps that’s why they’ve never played again.
Ball State: Ball State is an anomaly on this list because their first and only matchup with the Irish was not that long ago. The two squads’ first and only game came in 2018, and Ball State held its own, losing just 24-16.
Bowling Green: The Falcons first met Notre Dame in 2019 and it was quite a disastrous event. Bowling Green was overwhelmed 52-0.
Miami (O): Miami of Ohio has been outscored 98-17 in their two matchups with the Irish. Like many other MAC teams on this list, their first game was over 100 years ago. That first matchup saw Miami lose 46-0. They got their chance at revenge in 2017 but fell short, 52-17.
Toledo: The Rockets have the honor of being the MAC team on this list that came the closest to not being on it. Notre Dame football almost stumbled into a loss en route to a 32-29 victory in 2021.
