Notre Dame football vs the Big 12

Sometimes less is more. That appears to be true regarding Notre Dame football being undefeated against five Big 12 programs. The biggest reason the school has never lost to any of these five programs is that they simply haven’t had to play them all that much. In fact, of the quintet in the Big 12, only one team has taken on the Fighting Irish more than twice ever.

Baylor: There are few teams in college football that have been inept when they’ve had a shot to knock off one of the most well-known powers in the sport. The Bears first played the Irish back in 1925 and got rolled 41-0. To prove that wasn’t a fluke, they lost the 1998 rematch, 27-3.

Houston: Unlike Baylor, new Big 12 team Houston made the most of their chances against Notre Dame football. However, they fell a point short in a 35-34 defeat in the 1979 Cotton Bowl. Apparently, they decided that was enough.

Iowa State: The Cyclones stand out among all the teams Notre Dame has defeated because ISU has never faced off against them in the regular season. Their only tilt came in a 33-9 loss in the 2019 Camping World Bowl. That is was the postseason likely made it a bit easier to stomach the blowout loss.

TCU: It’s clear that the Irish don’t venture into Texas that often. They also don’t host teams from the Lonestar State all that often. That is once again demonstrated by the fact that the Golden Domers have only played the Horned Frogs once, and that was back in 1972. The Big 12 school didn’t score a point in a 21-0 loss.

West Virginia: Notre Dame football had a bit of a burgeoning rivalry with the West Virginia Mountaineers just before and after the turn of the century. The two programs first met in the 1989 Fiesta Bowl which saw the Irish win 34-21. The two schools met three more times so far. 1997 (21-14), 2000 (42-28), and 2001 (34-24). Notre Dame football never really dominated but they emerged 4-0.
