Jerome Bettis

Nicknamed “The Bus” due to his size and demeanor, Jerome Bettis was a Hall of Fame running back who played at Notre Dame in the early 90’s before a fantastic NFL career.

He was the 10th overall pick of the 1993 NFL Draft by way of the Los Angeles Rams but would be far more known for his decade playing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and later Comeback Player of the Year for his first seasons in Pittsburgh, both 1400-yard rushing campaigns. That rookie year included a 212-yard game against New Orleans.

Bettis was named First Team All-Pro for both of those seasons and was one of the NFL’s best running backs of the 1990s, with 1000-yard rushing seasons in eight of his first nine years. He was also elected to six Pro Bowls and remained the Steelers’ running back until 2005.

While he was also an important back in the playoffs, scoring nine career postseason touchdowns, Bettis ended his career on the highest stage, helping the Steelers to win Super Bowl XL over the Seattle Seahawks.

Bettis didn’t have to wait too long to get the call to Canton, as he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015. He even went back to Notre Dame to get his bachelor’s degree a few years ago, cementing a legacy for the Steelers and the Fighting Irish.
