With Brian Kelly’s departure from LSU in the offseason, Marcus Freeman took over the program as head coach. He began the 2022 campaign with back-to-back losses, first 21-10 to Ohio State, then 26-21 to Marshall. After those losses, Freeman was able to rally his team to a 9-4 record that included wins over three ranked opponents.

After knocking off South Carolina and Spencer Rattler in the Gator Bowl to end the season, the Fighting Irish were ranked 18th in the final AP Poll and 21st in the last CFP rankings.
