With the win, the Fighting Irish finished the season 7-5 after entering the year ranked No. 5 in the country. This was Gerry Faust’s third season as head coach of Notre Dame and his first bowl game appearance. He was replaced by Lou Holtz in 1986 after failing to win more than seven games in any of his five seasons.
