Notre Dame Fighting Irish News: Special teams sense of ownership, more
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team took some big steps against Pittsburgh and the special teams unit was a big part of that.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish posted quite the blowout win over the Pittsburgh Panthers on Saturday. Once again, the win was a team effort much like it was against USC.
The defense was once again the big culprit for the victory, but special teams played a part as well. After the game, head coach Marcus Freeman talked about what it meant to have the special teams unit step up in a big way.
"“The biggest thing is the sense of ownership, I love going into the kickoff and kickoff return huddles, because you can feel it from the players. ‘Let’s win the interval. Let’s go. Let’s do our job. Don’t let this guy make the play.’ When our players start to own it, it’s not just another play. ‘Oh, man, we’ve got to do kickoff return or kickoff.’ Like there is an excitement and ownership of it.”"
Freeman went on to add that Special Teams Coordinator Marty Biagi got the buy-in he’s been striving for and now the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have another weapon in their arsenal.
