A new transfer quarterback target appears ready to enter the portal, but he could be bringing some baggage with him if Notre Dame Football goes after him.

One of the biggest shocks of the college football season came this week when North Carolina State quarterback MJ Morris announced he was redshirting for the rest of the season.

Granted, that announcement is only a shock if you don’t know the context. MJ Morris has been the starting quarterback for the Wolfpack for the last four games. He’s gone 3-1 in those games. NC State is 6-3 on the season. They’ve got 3 more games and then a bowl game.

However, Morris’ season is done. And it appears it’s against his head coach Dave Doeren’s wishes.

Morris’s intention appears to be to keep his sophomore season of eligibility using the rule that players don’t lose a year if they only play in four games. Anyone can see him doing that only because he plans to go elsewhere next season.

Considering that Notre Dame Football is going to be looking for a new quarterback after Sam Hartman graduates and is said to be planning to be active in the portal, South Bend could be a landing spot.

Morris has shown a ton of ability in a short period of time. He’s completed 55.8 percent of his passes for just over 700 yards, 7 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. But it’s the giving up on his team in the middle of the season that could sour fans and potential teammates on bringing him in.

If the Fighting Irish do pursue him, he’s packing some baggage. And not just the kind he’ll use to carry his clothes from North Carolina to Indiana.

It’s a bit worse considering his coach clearly did not agree with the decision. One has to wonder if Marcus Freeman and company would want to go anywhere near someone who could be perceived as a quitter.

It seems likely that at the the very least, Notre Dame Football would need to get some assurances from MJ Morris before really pursuing him.
