The Notre Dame Fighting Irish basketball team is going to struggle as Micah Shrewsberry rebuilds the program and Saturday was a tough reminder.

In the team’s two games so far this year, there has been a pattern. That pattern hasn’t been particularly fun to watch.

Against both Niagara and Western Carolina, Notre Dame started off slowly. They had to rally in the second half.

Against Niagara, that approach ended up working as freshman guard Markus Burton got red hot en route to a freshman scoring record. On Saturday night, the Irish weren’t able to complete the comeback.

Against the Catamounts, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish hit just 37.9 percent and suffered their first season loss, 71-61. It’s the kind of setback that must be expected but still painful.

Early in the season, it appears that the Irish are going to only be as good as Burton. While another freshman Connor Booth did step up, Burton scored just 17 on 6-of-15 shooting.

What is going to make this step back a bit more painful is that next up is the Auburn Tigers and then a schedule that’s got quite a few toughies on it. There of course, was some hope that the Irish might have been ahead of schedule.

It still could be, considering how many young players it has. But this could also be a season that record-wise, looks very similar to the disaster that was last season.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish to discover their fate

While the basketball teams are just starting their season and the football team is winding up theirs, the Notre Dame Soccer team is about to learn if they’re going to the NCAA Tournament.

Tomorrow is selection Monday, and while the Irish lost in the ACC Tournament, there is an outside chance they could get an at-large bid.

Women’s Soccer advances

While the men wait to hear their fate, the women are still rolling. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish Women’s Soccer team won on Saturday night against Valparaiso in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Now, the Irish will travel to Fayetteville, where the No. 2 seeded Arkansas Razorbacks will host a four-team regional starting next Friday. First, Notre Dame will challenge the winner of LSU/Memphis in the second round.
