Former Notre Dame Football star secures NFL career milestone
A former Notre Dame Football star has put an official exclamation point on his rookie season as he’s achieved a big first in his NFL career.
Notre Dame loves to think of itself as “Tight End U,” with good reason. There are quite a few ex-Notre Dame Football players at that position that are currently playing their trade in the NFL.
The latest to do that is none other than Michael Mayer, who is busy working through his rookie season with the Las Vegas Raiders. It’s got to be an interesting season for the rook, considering he’s seen his season-opening head coach get fired and then his team go 2-0 under the new head man.
On Sunday night, Mayer added his own little chapter into what could be an interesting Cinderella story in 2023. The ex-Notre Dame Football player has been used off and on throughout the season, but against the New York Jets, he record an NFL career first.
Mayer caught his first professional touchdown.
It wasn’t flashy. He didn’t have to run long to do it. However, it was a big catch for him and his team.
Early in the fourth quarter, with the game tied 9-9 and neither team having much success finding the endzone, new Raiders starting quarterback Aidan O’Connell found Mayer on a 7-yard touchdown pass. Las Vegas went on to win 16-12.

On the night, Mayer had 3 catches for 19 yards and that touchdown. It was arguably his best game of his young career since he had 6 catches for 75 yards in his team’s Week 5 21-17 win over the New England Patriots.
Even better news for people who love the idea of Notre Dame Football staking a claim as Tight End U is that he’s been quite consistent over the course of the season and will likely see more scoring passes in 2023.
His solid start to a rookie season comes after dominating for the Fighting Irish. Mayer hauled down 180 receptions for 2,099 yards and 18 touchdowns in just three seasons of Notre Dame Football.
