Notre Dame football defensive coordinator Al Golden might be a much sought after name this winter, especially for one particular head coaching opening.

It’s officially that time of year. It’s actually been that time of year for a few weeks now.

Coaching carousel season is only starting to heat up and Notre Dame football faithful are right to be a bit curious about just how the season is going to go for them.

While it will almost certainly leave Marcus Freeman and offensive coordinator Gerad Parker untouched, Al Golden is one of the hottest names if college football these days. He’s built a Fighting Irish defense that is among the best in the country. Other schools have taken notice.

One ACC school in particular has noticed the job Golden has done in 2023. And with the firing of Dino Babers on Sunday morning, Golden is popping up on the short list according to more than a few analysts.

It is obviously quite early in the process. There’s a long way to go before Golden is anything more than a guy getting talked about on social media.

However, it seems as if there is a specific fit when it comes to Golden and Syracuse. And not just because he’s a veteran defensive coordinator on one of the best teams in the country.

Pete Thamel reported that he’s already hearing a list of candidates that Syracuse will look at in the coming weeks.

Toledo’s Jason Candle, former BYU and Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall, former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone, Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White, James Madison head coach Curt Cignetti, Ohio State DC Jim Knowles, Colorado’s Sean Lewis, Holy Cross head coach Bob Chesney, Kentucky offensive coordinator Liam Coen and Pittsburgh Steelers DC Teryl Austin.

Among that group, Golden stands out because he’s been a Power 5 head coach before, even if his stint with the Miami Hurricanes didn’t go as hoped.

For now, Notre Dame football fans must wait and see if the Fighting Irish DC gets poached.
