Not only did the Notre Dame football team get an easy win over Wake, but Sam Hartman moved closer to the top of the record books with a big performance.

Senior Day at Notre Dame Stadium is always an emotional day for Fighting Irish players playing, or likely playing their last game at home. For Sam Hartman, there was some extra emotion considering he was going up against the school he played so well for over so many games.

He played well enough in fact, that when the smoke cleared on his final home college football game, he had himself a 45-7 victory and had moved into fourth place on the all-time career touchdown passes chart.

With his four TDs, he now has 22 on the season and 132 in his career. He is alone in fourth place and needs just three more touchdown passes to jump into third place all time.

In a lot of ways, it felt as though the game was a kind of underlining of what Notre Dame football fans thought they were going to get. Even with his 22 touchdown passes already and two games to go before his college football career is over, it’s quite a bit lower than the numbers he was putting up with Wake.

In his final two seasons with the Demon Deacons, he had 39 and 38 touchdown passes.

Had Harman had the kind of season he did in 2021 and 2022, he’d already be sitting pretty in second place for all time touchdown passes. There would actually be a chance to take the top spot, currently held by Case Keenum with 155 touchdown passes.

As it is, even in a season that’s been disappointing on its face, getting into number three on the all-time list, and passing Graham Harrell who finished with 134 career TDs seems all but a foregone conclusion.

Notre Dame football fans can be proud to have someone like that come through South Bend, even if most of those numbers were amassed somewhere else.
