Riley Leonard as the next Notre Dame football quarterback has had rumblings for a while now and on Sunday, things started moving in that possible direction.

There’s no telling just how Notre Dame football is going to handle the replacement for Sam Hartman outside of “someone from the transfer portal.” However, Riley Leonard is right at the top of quite a few fans’ wishlists.

Quite a few things have to happen in order for the Duke quarterback to come to South Bend. The first of which is obviously that he needs to enter the transfer portal. The likelihood of Leonard doing that got a lot bigger on Sundays.

Reports started circulating fast and furiously that Texas A&M is set to hire Blue Devils head coach Mike Elko. Should those reports come true and Elko jumps to the SEC, it makes it that much more likely that Leonard will head elsewhere.

It is worth mentioning that just over 12 hours ago, everyone seemed rather convinced that Mark Stoops was going to be the guy. While these reports can change on a dime, it appears that things are really going to move quickly. That means things could move quickly for Leonard.

Notre Dame football dominoes are falling for Riley Leonard

The transfer portal opens in a matter of days. December 4 is right around the corner.

Some players have already announced their intention of entering when they can. For now, Leonard hasn’t said what direction he’s going to go. Of course, it would appear he was waiting to see if his coach would go somewhere else or stick with Duke.

There is a danger for Notre Dame football, if it’s counting on Riley Leonard to come to town. Elko’s going to want to set up his own regime in College Station. It stands to reason he’ll be looking to get his quarterback to follow him.

Then it all comes down to what will draw the Blue Devils quarterback in.
