Notre Dame football might be in trouble in Riley Leonard race
The Notre Dame football team might be losing a bit of ground to an SEC team from Riley Leonard’s home state as the Duke QB looks for a new home.
There are few soap operas in the sporting world that can match college football recruiting. Fighting Irish fans might be learning that the hard way regarding Riley Leonard.
According to 247Sports’ Tom Loy, there are some new teams that have entered the race for the former Duke quarterback. While there was a time it felt like Notre Dame football wasn’t just the team to beat, but a lock to win the Leonard sweepstakes, this thing might take a bit longer to play out.
Loy said that a couple of teams have entered the race for the former Blue Devil. Among them is a school from his home state in Auburn.
Leonard is Fairhope, Alabama. The fact that he’s from SEC country is one of the reasons there was some talk that the dual-threat signal-caller might follow Elko to Texas A&M.
It doesn’t appear that’s going to happen. But that doesn’t mean he won’t head to his home-state conference.
Notre Dame football still in the lead
While it appears that there is reason to worry, the Irish don’t need to panic just yet. Even Loy believes that Notre Dame is still the team to beat in the race for Riley Leonard.
The former Duke quarterback is in South Bend right now. He arrived on Tuesday and he’s apparently being given the red carpet approach.
It’s still possible that he’ll pull the trigger on his new team on that visit. However, there is now a chance that he’ll take some other visits before he picks a school.
If he leaves South Bend without committing to Notre Dame football, that could be a flashing warning sign. Or it could just mean that this recruiting soap opera has a few more twists and turns until it finally reaches its fairytale conclusion.
