Throughout the College Football Playoff era, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have been a top-six or seven program in the sport. They have made the playoff multiple times under two different regimes. Marcus Freeman picked up right where Brian Kelly left off, only this time he is using mass appeal to his advantage when it comes to taking that next step. Of course, his team needs more explosiveness.
One of their top recruiting targets for 2027 in wide receiver Julius Jones believes he can offer that.
"They’ve been lacking a real playmaker on the outside since I was little — since they had guys like Chase Claypool. I can be that and more.”
The Notre Dame legacy mentioning former Irish star wide receiver Chase Claypool by name is huge.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Jones is the No. 6 player from Florida, the No. 9 wide receiver in the country, and the No. 56 overall player in the 2027 recruiting cycle. The St. Thomas Aquinas standout from Fort Lauderdale has 44 official offers, but seems to be the highest on his namesake father's alma mater. It should be noted that his uncle is former Pro Bowler Thomas Jones.
Jones' Uncle Thomas starred at Virginia Tech before having tremendous success over in the NFL.
Julius Jones believes he can be the next Chase Claypool for Notre Dame
Even though he plays a different position than his famous father and uncle, Jones seems to possess the same vision as his relatives. Part of what made Claypool so dominant in a Notre Dame uniform was his physicality to come up with catches that no other receiver would go after. Mapletron's NFL career may have fizzled out rather quickly, but he was certainly a fantastic player while in South Bend.
There are so many things working in Notre Dame's favor to land Jones out of St. Thomas Aquinas. He is a Notre Dame legacy. Jones plays at a Catholic football powerhouse in Florida. He mentioned Claypool by name as a former Notre Dame receiver he looked up to. To make this an even easier sell, Freeman has made it cooler than ever to play for the Irish. It would be stunning if Jones did not sign.
Overall, Notre Dame is in a fantastic place as a program. The Fighting Irish can compete and beat just about everyone they play. That being said, recruiting and developing star players outside the numbers on both sides of football has long been an issue for this school this century. Simply, when a player of Jones' caliber can get into Notre Dame and wants to come here, then go make it happen.
The more guys Notre Dame signs like Claypool, Jones, or Kyle Hamilton out of high school, the better.
