For the last few weeks, Miami Hurricanes fans have had a bone to pick with the College Football Playoff committee and where they rank the Canes compared to Notre Dame. However, after Tuesday night, the committee made it clear there needs to be less complaining coming from the ACC school.
According to CFP Chair Hunter Yurachek, the group did what Miami fans have been wanting them to do for weeks. They directly compared the Canes and the Fighting Irish as they're now in the same "group" of teams based on the rankings.
However, now that the two teams are directly compared, things aren't turning out the way Hurricanes fans might hope. The committee, which had previously said it wasn't directly comparing UM to Notre Dame, now believes the Irish are simply a better team. That's even despite ND losing in the head-to-head matchup.
Why the CFP says Notre Dame is ahead of Miami in the rankings
Yurachek's main point is that the head-to-head game is "only one data point," but it's not the end-all and be-all.
"The committee has felt like, as you watched Notre Dame on film, watched their games throughout year, that they have been consistent, even in the early-season games that they lost by three in Miami and by one point to Texas A&M."
"And so we compare a number of things, when we're looking at teams that are closely ranked together. And so you've got some teams that between Miami and Notre Dame, such as an Alabama, such as a BYU, that we're also comparing Miami to."
While this won't end the complaining about Notre Dame being ahead of Miami in the CFP rankings, it sheds a bit more light as to why the committee thinks the way it does.
