A few years back, Tyler Buchner was thought of as “the man” for the Notre Dame football team. He came in as a highly touted quarterback and even started a few games here and there, but it never really worked out.
It didn’t work out to the point where Buchner eventually moved on and tried his luck with the Alabama Crimson Tide. However, it appears that his heart never really left South Bend. He eventually came back, this time as a wide receiver. And while he hasn’t seen much action during the games, he’s proved to be invaluable to the Irish as they got ready for two teams that can be pretty hard to prepare for.
Tyler Buchner might never get another snap for Notre Dame football at quarterback when the stats count, but he’s been running scout team for the team in the weeks leading up to first Navy and now Army. And according to his head coach, he’s done a great job getting the defense ready to face the option offenses that can be so deadly when a team only sees them now and then.
Notre Dame football prepped by former QB1 turned wide receiver
“Really has owned a position and studied it, practiced it, and walked through it. And he's done a great job of being our scout team quarterback this week,” Freeman told the media on Thursday. “And understanding all the details that this offense truly entails. From the cadence to the motions to the specific running points and throwing opportunities that they've utilized. And so he's done as well as we could have asked to prepare us Tuesday, Wednesday for this challenge we are gonna face on Saturday.”
Buchner got the Notre Dame footbal defense so well prepared against Navy, they forced six turnovers and beat the Midshipmen 51-14. They’d love to echo that performance against the Black Knights.
