Notre Dame football fans have been watching head coach Marcus Freeman grow and develop right before their very eyes this season. After a 2023 that ended with a few too many losses for anyone to be happy about, he’s managed to keep the program together and even allow it to get better in the wake of the inexcusable loss to Northern Illinois.

That growth has certainly made Irish fans happy. He’s starting to look like one of the best head coaches in the country. But there’s a downside to that for ND fans. He’s about to become very popular.

He’s already quite popular among some in the NFL. Last week, there was talk that several GMs had started turning their attention to the Notre Dame football head coach. Now he’s been specifically mentioned as a possible top target for the Chicago Bears.

Notre Dame football coach could be on the move

Over the weekend, the Bears fired head coach Matt Eberfllus after the latest in a string of abysmal losses. On Sunday, NFL Network’s Peter Schrager reportedly mentioned Marcus Freeman as an “early name to watch” for that job opening.

There are of course, several questions that need to be answered before Fighting Irish fans need to be too worried. The first is whether or not the Bears are giving him a good long look.

And then of course, there’s the question as to whether Freeman wants to leave Notre Dame Football. It’s been pretty clear after some of these wins that he is quite fired up. That he truly loves the tradition of Notre Dame and what it offers. It could, especially this early in his career, that he’s content to be one of the best coaches in college rather than risk it in the NFL.
