Could this be the last season we see the Notre Dame football team take on USC? As much as it's going to pain fans to even think about, that's very much in the cards. The current contract with the two sides expires after the 2025 meeting.

So, what will happen in the future? Both sides appeared to be keen on getting something done to keep things going, but recent reports have stated that the Trojans are more open, for now, to a one-year extension than getting a long-term deal done. What?

On Monday, SI's Pat Forde provides an update that sure has a lot of people talking. This includes him connecting with Notre Dame Athletic Director Pete Bevacqua, who appears to be putting things in USC's court. Will the Trojans end up taking the negotiations seriously?

The Notre Dame vs. USC football rivalry is in jeopardy of continuing past this season

“I think Southern Cal and Notre Dame should play every year for as long as college football is played, and SC knows that’s how we feel," Bevacqua told Forde.

Short, sweet and to the point from the Notre Dame leader. USC's Cody Worsham told Forde that the Trojans know how much the game means to fans and they want to keep the rivalry going, but Bevacqua's comment sure was telling.

It almost seems like he's a bit frustrated with the way things have been going, right? Whenever USC and Notre Dame take the field against one another, it's always one of the most intriguing showdowns of the weekend. It's one of the best rivalries in college football too.

It'd be a damn shame if things don't keep on going after this fall. Come this October, USC And Notre Dame will meet in South Bend and it's a contest countless people already have written down on their calendars. Both teams are built for huge years in '25, which will only make things even more intriguing. For now, however, no one knows what the future has in store for the rivalry, which is terrible on so many different levels.
