It is official, at least for the next five years, Notre Dame and USC will not face each other in a rivalry game that was started all the way back in 1926. The only two times these two teams didn't face in the last nearly 100 years were during World War II and the 2020 Covid-19 season.

Before the 2025 season started, it was reported that Notre Dame and USC were having trouble renewing their series contract, and now it is reportedly being put on hold until at least 2030. It was reported that Notre Dame was more than willing to set up the series, but USC was unhappy with game dates, knowing that later games in the season seem to matter more to the CFP selection committee.

Basically, it seems like USC is scared to lose to Notre Dame later in the season and potentially knock themselves out of playoff contention in November.

In lieu of the USC news, Notre Dame did announce a home-and-home series with similarly vaulted College Football Playoff team BYU. The two teams will play in Provo, UT, next season and in South Bend in 2027.

While fans are delighted by the BYU news, they are absolutely enraged about the USC news and took to social media to let the Trojans have it.

Notre Dame fans are pointing all the fingers at USC for rivalry death

USC is just going to become a running joke in South Bend at this point. Notre Dame was more than willing to work something out, but clearly, the Trojans were just too scared.

USC won't get around the coward accusations with a stat like that.

It is really clear that no one wanted this except for USC.

Of course, USC is scared; they have lost 10 of the last 13 meetings, and if they weren't scared, they would have scheduled the games. This is such a historic rivalry game, and for it to end because of this is really sad, and there is at least some hope that it will return one day.
