When Notre Dame's season ends, forward Carson Towt plans to go pro, but not in the sport he's most known for. Towt will be trying his hand at football and attempting to head to the NFL.
On Monday, JB Sports Management took to Instagram to officially announce that Towt has signed on with the agency, stating: "JB Sports is fired up to welcome Notre Dame's stud Basketball player @carsontowt for NFL Representation!! Every skill set Carson has translates to the next level, and we are excited to see where he goes. Welcome to the squad, Carson!!"
Towt, who stands at 6-foot-8, isn't much of a scorer, but he is someone who has routinely cleaned the glass well during his basketball career, including with Notre Dame. This season, he's averaging 9.4 rebounds after hauling down an average of 12.4 boards per contest last year with Northern Arizona.
Notre Dame basketball standout Carson Towt follows path of hoops‑to‑NFL converts
It's not clear what position Towt will try to play, but considering he already knows how to use his big body to block out, and he also has the ability to go up and get the ball, it's assumed he's looking at tight end.
In this day and age, it sounds bizarre to think a college basketball player will make the 53-man roster for the NFL, but it's also not totally unheard of. Antonio Gates, one of the best tight ends to ever play the game, didn't play a down at Kent State. Instead, he was a star power forward.
Mo Alie-Cox did the same for VCU and then signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent. Alie-Cox has now been with the Colts for the last eight seasons and has played in 17 games for five straight seasons.
That certainly doesn't mean that Carson Towt will absolutely follow in their footsteps. However, JB Sports likely wouldn't sign the Notre Dame basketball player unless they think it's a real possibility.
